Educational Q&A

The verse highlights social and ethical decorum in encounter: one should inquire respectfully about identity and protection/affiliation, especially when someone appears extraordinary. It also reflects humility—admitting ignorance rather than making rash assumptions.

Koṭika addresses a newly arrived figure, wondering whether she has come from the abodes of major deities (Dhātṛ, Vidhātṛ, Savitṛ, or Indra). He notes a mutual lack of introductions: she has not asked who they are, and they do not know who her ‘nātha’ (lord/protector) is in this place.
