Educational Q&A

The verse emphasizes how sacred tradition preserves identities through relational roles—lineage (“daughter of the ocean”) and service (“nurse of Skanda”). It highlights the ethical value of nurturing and support as a revered, remembered function.

Mārkaṇḍeya identifies a female figure by giving two traditional descriptors: her origin as the ocean’s daughter associated with Lohita, and her recognized role as Skanda’s dhātrī (nurse/foster-mother), situating her within Skanda-related mythic genealogy.
