Adhyāya 208: Aṅgirasī-kanyāḥ

अतिपुण्यानि पापानि तानि द्विजवरोत्तम | द्विजश्रेष्ठ! जो धर्मात्मा पुरुष सदा शिष्टाचारका सेवन करते हैं और प्रज्ञारूपी प्रासादपर आरूढ़ हो भाँति-भाँतिके लोकचरित्रोंका निरीक्षण तथा अत्यन्त पुण्य एवं पापकर्मोंकी समीक्षा करते हैं, वे महान्‌ भयसे मुक्त हो जाते हैं || ९७-९८ $ ।। एतत्‌ ते सर्वमाख्यातं यथाप्रज्ञं यथाश्रुतम्‌ । शिष्टाचारगुणं ब्रह्मन्‌ पुरस्कृत्य द्विजर्षभ,ब्रह्मन्‌! विप्रवर! इस प्रकार शिष्टाचारके गुणोंके सम्बन्धमें मैंने जैसा जाना और सुना है, वह सब आपसे कह सुनाया है

atipuṇyāni pāpāni tāni dvijavarottama | dvijaśreṣṭha yo dharmātmā puruṣaḥ sadā śiṣṭācārakā sevanaṃ karoti prajñārūpī-prāsādapar ārūḍhaḥ bhānti-bhānti-ke lokacaritrāṇāṃ nirīkṣaṇaṃ tathā atyanta-puṇya-pāpakarmāṇāṃ samīkṣāṃ karoti sa mahato bhayāt mucyate || etat te sarvam ākhyātaṃ yathāprajñaṃ yathāśrutam | śiṣṭācāraguṇaṃ brahman puraskṛtya dvijarṣabha ||

قال الصيّاد: «يا أفضلَ البراهمة! إنّ من الأعمال ما يفوق في البرّ والفضل، ومنها ما هو إثمٌ وخطيئة. غير أنّ الرجلَ ذي الروح الدارمية، الذي يلازم سلوكَ أهل التهذيب والرُّقيّ (śiṣṭācāra) على الدوام—كأنّه جالسٌ على قصرٍ من التمييز—يراقب طرائقَ الناس المتنوّعة في العالم، ويُمعن النظر في أيّ الأفعال حقًّا فضيلةٌ وأيّها جديرٌ باللوم، يتحرّر من الخوف العظيم. وهكذا، أيها البراهمن، أيها الأسمى بين «المولودين مرّتَين»، قد أخبرتك بكلّ ما أدركتُه وبكلّ ما سمعتُه، مقدّمًا فضلَ حُسن السلوك (śiṣṭācāra) في الصدارة.»
