Educational Q&A

The verse contrasts social-ethical duties: hunting is framed as inappropriate for Brahmins, and the king models restraint by refusing to punish even a false speaker, choosing instead to submit to righteous guidance to gain merit (puṇya) and a higher moral outcome.

A king addresses a Brahmin interlocutor, stating that hunting is not a Brahmin’s proper conduct. Although the Brahmin has spoken falsely, the king declines to punish him and declares that from this day he will follow the Brahmin’s commands in pursuit of attaining a meritorious realm.
