Indradyumna Upākhyāna: On Kīrti, Smṛti, and Restoration
svairācārāś ca puruṣā yoṣitaś ca viśāmpate | anyonyaṁ na sahiṣyanti yugānte paryupasthite, mahārāja |
As the yuga declines, unchecked self-will (svairācāra) erodes forbearance (kṣamā) and mutual respect, leading to social and domestic conflict; the implied ethical counsel is restraint, patience, and adherence to dharma to preserve harmony.
Mārkaṇḍeya is describing to the king the approaching ‘yugānta’ conditions—prophetic signs of moral and social deterioration—highlighting how relationships between men and women become marked by intolerance and discord.
