Reconciling Contingency and Human Effort
mayā praṇunnān mātaṅgān rathinaḥ sādinastathā | tathā narān abhikruddhān niṣṇantaṃ kṣatriyarṣabhān ||
The verse reflects the kṣatriya ethos of martial duty: in the context of impending conflict, Bhīma asserts his capacity to confront every arm of an army (elephants, chariots, cavalry) and to meet fierce opponents without hesitation—an ethic of courage and readiness within the warrior code.
Bhīmasena is speaking in Udyoga Parva, emphasizing his battlefield strength. He declares that he has already routed major military units and slain enraged, elite kṣatriya fighters, underscoring his confidence and intimidation of adversaries.
