Reconciling Contingency and Human Effort
yathāmati bravīmy etad viddhi mām adhikaṃ tataḥ | draṣṭāsi yudhi sambādhe pravṛtte vaiśase ’hani ||
Bhīma asserts that true worth is proven by action under extreme trial. Words may be limited by present circumstance, but character and capability are revealed in the decisive moment—here, the ethical crucible of battle where a warrior’s resolve and responsibility are tested.
In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war tensions, Bhīmasena speaks with fierce confidence, warning that his real power will be witnessed once the fighting begins—when the battlefield becomes densely packed and the day turns into a scene of lethal slaughter.
