Vidura-nīti: Atithi-dharma, Trust, Counsel-Secrecy, and Traits of Sustainable Rule
Udyoga Parva, Adhyāya 38
akīrti vinayo hanti hanty anartha-parākramaḥ | hanti nityaṃ kṣamā krodham ācāro hanty alakṣaṇam ||
Vidura presents a chain of ethical antidotes: humility counters disgrace, patience quenches anger, and disciplined conduct removes inauspicious tendencies; by contrast, valor without discernment becomes a cause of ruin. True strength is self-governance aligned with dharma.
In Udyoga Parva, as war pressures mount and counsel is urgently needed, Vidura speaks as a moral advisor, emphasizing inner restraint and righteous conduct as the practical means to prevent destructive outcomes in statecraft and personal behavior.
