अध्याय २९ — वासुदेव–संजय संवादः

Karma, Varṇa-Dharma, and the Ethics of Governance

हस्तिनापुरमें जो बहुत-से हाथीवान हैं तथा जो अन्धे और बूढ़े हैं, उन सबको मेरी कुशल बताकर अन्तमें मेरी ओरसे उनके भी आरोग्य आदिका समाचार पूछना ।। मा भैष्ट दुःखेन कुजीवितेन नूनं कृतं परलोकेषु पापम्‌ । निगृहा शत्रून्‌ सुहृदो$नुगृहा वासोभिरन्नेन च वो भरिष्ये,साथ ही उन्हें आश्वासन देते हुए मेरा यह संदेश सुना देना। तुम्हें जो दुःख प्राप्त होता है अथवा कुत्सित जीवन बिताना पड़ता है, इसके कारण तुमलोग भयभीत न होना। निश्चय ही यह दूसरे जन्मोंमें किये हुए पापका फल प्रकट हुआ है। मैं कुछ ही दिनोंमें अपने शत्रुओंको कैद करके हितैषी सुहृदोंपर अनुग्रह करते हुए अन्न और वस्त्रद्वारा तुमलोगोंका भरण- पोषण करूँगा

hāstināpure ye bahavo hastivantaḥ santi tathā ye’ndhāḥ sthavirāś ca, tān sarvān mama kuśalaṃ nivedya ante mama taraphāt teṣām api ārogya-ādikaṃ vārtāṃ pṛccha. mā bhaiṣṭa duḥkhena kujīvitena; nūnaṃ kṛtaṃ paralokeṣu pāpam. nigṛhya śatrūn suhṛdo’nugṛhya vāsobhir annena ca vo bhariṣye; tathā tebhyaḥ āśvāsanaṃ dadan idaṃ mama sandeshaṃ śrāvaya.

قال يودهيشثيرا: «في هستينابورا، بلّغ سلامتي إلى الجميع—ولا سيما القائمين على الفيلة، والعميان والشيوخ—ثم في الختام، من جهتي، اسأل أيضًا عن صحتهم وطمأنينتهم. وقل لهم: لا تخافوا بسبب ما نزل بكم من ألم، ولا لأنكم أُكرهتم على عيشٍ بائس؛ فذلك، لا ريب، ثمرةُ آثامٍ اقترفتموها في ولاداتٍ سابقة. وطمئنهم أنّي عمّا قريب سأقهر الأعداء وأقيّدهم، وأفيض الإحسان على الأصدقاء ذوي النية الطيبة، وأكفلهم بالطعام والكساء.»

The verse blends royal duty with karmic reflection: people should not collapse into fear when suffering arises, since hardship may be the fruition of past actions; meanwhile, a righteous leader must respond with compassion and concrete support—protecting the community, restraining aggressors, and ensuring basic welfare like food and clothing.

Yudhiṣṭhira sends a message to those in Hastināpura—especially vulnerable groups (the blind and the aged) and those connected with royal resources (elephant-keepers). He asks after their health, reassures them amid distress, and promises that he will soon subdue the enemies and then provide for his well-wishers with provisions.
