Amba–Rama–Bhishma Dialogue on Vow and Refuge
sa tvaṁ gurur iti premaṇā mayā sammānito bhṛśam | guruvṛtti na jānīṣe tasmād yotsyāmi vai tvayā |
Reverence for a guru is not unconditional flattery; it presumes the guru upholds guru-dharma. When the teacher abandons proper conduct, the disciple may withdraw deference and hold the teacher morally accountable—even to the point of open confrontation.
Rama addresses an opponent whom he had treated as a guru out of affection and respect. Seeing behavior he deems unworthy of a teacher, he declares that the relationship of reverence has been violated and announces his decision to fight.
