Ambā Seeks Refuge with Rāma Jāmadagnya
ambovāca apānītāsmi bhīṣmeṇa bhagavann avijānātā | nābhijānāti me bhīṣmo brahman śālvagataṁ manaḥ ||
The verse foregrounds ethical tension between social custom and personal intention: actions like carrying a woman away for marriage are morally compromised when done without knowledge of her prior commitment and consent, and ignorance does not erase the harm caused.
Ambā explains to a revered Brāhmaṇa that Bhīṣma abducted her without realizing she was already emotionally committed to King Śālva; she emphasizes Bhīṣma’s lack of awareness of her inner choice.
