Udyoga Parva Adhyāya 132 — Vidura’s Counsel on Udyama, Yaśas, and Kṣātra-Dharma

तमाहुर्व्यर्थनामान स्त्रीवद्‌ य इह जीवति । जो पर अर्थात्‌ शत्रुका सामना करके उसके वेगको सह लेता है, वही उस पुरुषार्थके कारण पुरुष कहलाता है। जो इस जगत्‌में स्त्रीकी भाँति भीरुतापूर्ण जीवन बिताता है, उसका 'पुरुष' नाम व्यर्थ कहा गया है

tam āhur vyarthanāmānaḥ strīvad ya iha jīvati | yaḥ paraṃ (śatruṃ) samānaṃ kṛtvā tasya vegaṃ sahate, sa eva puruṣārthāt puruṣa ucyate | yaḥ punar asmin jagati strīvat bhīrutāpūrṇaṃ jīvanaṃ nayati, tasya ‘puruṣa’ nāma vyarthaṃ kathyate ||

يقول فايُو: «إنما يُدعى “رجلًا” اسمًا لا حقيقةً من يعيش هنا عيشةً كعيشة المرأة في الجبن والخوف. وإنما يُسمَّى “رجلًا” حقًّا، بما له من سعيٍ رجولي، من يواجه العدو ويحتمل اندفاع هجومه. أما من يقضي حياته في هذا العالم مرتعدًا من الجبن، كمرأةٍ خائفة، فيُقال إنه يحمل اسم “الرجل” عبثًا.»
