Bhīṣma grounds the instruction in reliable lineage: the account is not mere opinion but a tradition transmitted by authoritative sages (Nārada and Vyāsa). The ethical point is that dharma-teachings gain weight through trustworthy sources and careful preservation.
Bhīṣma, while instructing the king in Śānti Parva, introduces or reinforces a teaching by stating that he learned this episode earlier from Nārada, and that Vyāsa also used to reiterate it frequently in discussion—thus validating the narrative’s authenticity and importance.
