Attachment to sensual pleasure makes people mistake mere enjoyment for true success, blinding them to higher forms of benefit—ethical, spiritual, and liberating goods beyond ordinary worldly comfort.
Parāśara is instructing his listener in the Shanti Parva’s didactic mode, critiquing the common human tendency to idolize the ‘enjoyer’ as accomplished and to pursue pleasure as the highest aim, thereby overlooking superior goals.
