Ethical Restraint, Mortality, and Karma
arthakāmau parityajya viśoko vigatajvaraḥ | tṛṣṇāmohau tu saṃtyajya carāmi pṛthivīm imām ||
Renounce the twin pursuits of artha (gain) and kāma (pleasure), and uproot tṛṣṇā (craving) and moha (delusion). When desire and delusion fall away, one becomes viśoka (without grief) and vigatajvara (without inner fever), living with steadiness and peace.
A speaker named Samaḍ declares his present mode of life: having abandoned worldly aims and the mental forces that sustain them (craving and delusion), he now wanders the earth free from sorrow and inner turmoil—typical of Śānti Parva’s reflective, renunciatory instruction.
