जनकस्य युद्धोपदेशः — Janaka’s Instruction on Steadfast Battle-Conduct

त्यागमूलं हि शूराणां स्वर्गद्वारमनुत्तमम्‌ । इत्युक्तास्ते नृपतिना योधा: परपुरंजय,'शूरवीरोंको जो सर्वोत्तम स्वर्गलोकका द्वार प्राप्त होता है, उसमें उनका त्याग ही मूल कारण है'। शत्रुनगरीपर विजय पानेवाले युधिष्ठिर![ राजा जनकके ऐसा कहनेपर उन योद्धाओंने रणभूमिमें अपने महाराजका हर्ष बढ़ाते हुए उनके शत्रुओंपर विजय प्राप्त कर ली; अतः मनस्वी वीरको सदा युद्धके मुहानेपर डटे रहना चाहिये

tyāgamūlaṃ hi śūrāṇāṃ svargadvāram anuttamam | ity uktās te nṛpatinā yodhāḥ parapuraṃjayāḥ |

قال بهيشما: «إن باب السماء الذي لا يُضاهى للأبطال إنما أصله في الزهد—في التضحية بالنفس.» فلما وعظهم الملك بذلك، أخذ أولئك المحاربون—قاهرو مدائن الأعداء—الكلمة مأخذ الجد، وزادوا سرور سيدهم في ساحة الوغى، وظفروا بأعدائه. لذلك ينبغي للرجل الحازم أن يثبت دائماً عند فم المعركة، لا يزيغ عن واجبه.

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that for true heroes, the highest spiritual reward (the ‘gate to heaven’) is grounded in tyāga—self-sacrifice and renunciation of personal gain. Valor is ethically meaningful when it is rooted in giving oneself for dharma and the rightful cause.

Bhishma recounts how a king (identified here with Janaka) exhorts his warriors that their path to the highest heavenly attainment lies in self-sacrifice. Inspired, the warriors fight with renewed spirit, delight their ruler by their steadfastness, and achieve victory over the enemy.
