Narada said: “There sat (in Indra’s assembly) Sahadeva and Sunitha; the great ascetic Valmiki; Shamik, famed for truthfulness; and Prachetas, steadfast in his vow of truth.” In context, the verse functions as part of a larger catalogue of sages and divine beings present in the celestial court, underscoring that Indra’s sabhā is a space where power is legitimized by tapas (austerity), satya (truth), and dharmic integrity rather than mere force.

Educational Q&A

By foregrounding sages characterized by tapas and satya, the passage implies that true authority and splendor—even in a royal/divine court—rests on ethical qualities: truthfulness, disciplined austerity, and steadfast vows. The assembly’s greatness is measured by dharmic presence, not only by power.

Narada is describing Indra’s celestial assembly by enumerating the eminent beings seated there. This verse names several sages and exemplary figures, continuing a larger catalogue that portrays the sabhā as a gathering of the most authoritative witnesses of dharma.
