The verse highlights how indulgence—especially intoxication amid revelry—erodes self-control and ethical judgment. In the Mahābhārata’s moral frame, such loss of restraint becomes a proximate cause that allows latent curses and karmic consequences to manifest as catastrophe.
At Prabhāsa, the Yādavas begin a grand drinking festival. Music blares, performers and dancers fill the area, and the atmosphere turns into a large-scale revel—setting the stage for the later escalation into quarrel and destruction in the Mausala narrative.
