The verse highlights the harsh ethical reality of kṣatriya-dharma in a righteous war: once vows are taken and duty is engaged, a warrior like Arjuna must act with unwavering resolve. It also reminds the listener that even famed troops and allied hosts can be swept away when fate, strategy, and dharma-driven determination converge.
Sañjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Arjuna is dominating a particular sector of the battlefield, cutting down the Saṁśaptakas (his sworn challengers), along with Kosalan fighters and the Nārāyaṇī contingent, indicating a decisive and violent turn in that engagement.
