mā viṣāde manaḥ pārtha kṛthāḥ kālo hi durjayaḥ | kālaḥ sarvāṇi bhūtāni niyacchati pare vidhau ||
Do not succumb to despair: Time (kāla) is an overpowering force that directs all beings according to the higher, inevitable dispensation. The ethical thrust is steadiness of mind and acceptance of what lies beyond personal control while continuing one’s duty.
Sanjaya addresses Partha (Arjuna) with counsel meant to restrain grief and agitation amid the calamities of the war, reminding him that events unfold under the irresistible governance of Time and the ordained order.
