Yudhiṣṭhira’s Appeal and Kṛṣṇa’s Assurance
Droṇa-parva, Adhyāya 59
Nārada uvāca—Sañjaya! Daśaratha-nandanaḥ Bhagavān Śrīrāmo 'pi iha-sthānāt paramadhāma gata iti me śrutam. Tasya rāṣṭre sarvā prajā nityam ānandamagnā babhūva. Yathā pitā svān aurasa-putrān pālayati, tathā sa sarvāḥ prajāḥ snehapūrvakaṁ paripālayām āsa.
The verse presents the ethical ideal of kingship: a ruler should protect and nurture all subjects with the same affectionate responsibility a father shows toward his own children. Good governance is measured by the people’s sustained well-being and contentment, grounded in dharma and compassion.
Narada addresses Sanjaya and recalls a report about Sri Rama’s departure from the world to the supreme abode. He then highlights the exemplary condition of Rama’s kingdom, where the populace remained joyful because the king protected them lovingly and responsibly.
