Educational Q&A

The verse urges Arjuna to act decisively in accordance with kṣatriya-dharma: when the adversary is within reach, hesitation is improper; one should complete the duty of battle with resolve, taking a paradigmatic heroic act (Indra’s slaying of Vṛtra) as a model.

Vāyu addresses Arjuna at a critical moment in the Drona Parva, noting that the opponent has come close to Arjuna’s chariot and exhorting him to kill the foe, likening the act to Indra’s mythic victory over Vṛtra.
