Bhīṣma–Bhīma Strategic Engagement and Counsel to the King
sthitaṁ raṇāya mahate bhīṣmeṇa yudhi pālitam | mahārāja! evaṁ mahārathibhir vyūhabaddhā bhavatī senā mahāyuddhāya sthitā, bhīṣmaś ca yuddhasthale tasyā rakṣāṁ karoti sma |

The verse highlights the dharmic ideal of guardianship and command responsibility in war: an army’s strength is not only numbers but disciplined formation and a protector-leader who upholds order and morale, here embodied by Bhīṣma.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the Kaurava forces have been arranged into a battle-formation by elite warriors and are standing prepared for the great conflict, with Bhīṣma actively guarding and sustaining the army on the battlefield.
