Moral collapse at the moment of duty is condemned: it is unworthy of the noble (ārya), yields no higher good (asvargya), and results in dishonour (akīrti). The verse frames Arjuna’s grief as an ethical failing to be corrected by right understanding and steadfastness.
On the battlefield, Arjuna has become overwhelmed and unwilling to fight. Kṛṣṇa responds sharply, questioning the source of this sudden despondency and warning that such weakness is ignoble, spiritually unproductive, and socially disgraceful.
