Bṛhaspatistu tāṃ śrutvā Maruttasya mahīpateḥ | samṛddhim atidevebhyaḥ santāpam akarod bhūśam ||
The verse cautions that attachment to rank and comparison can generate envy and suffering even in the wise or powerful; dharmic conduct requires rejoicing in others’ merit and prosperity rather than being pained by it.
A report reaches Bṛhaspati that King Marutta has achieved extraordinary prosperity, exceeding even the gods’ wealth; upon hearing this, Bṛhaspati becomes intensely distressed, indicating a brewing conflict of prestige and influence.
