Pānīya-dāna and Anna-dāna: The Primacy of Life-Sustaining Gifts
evam annād dhi sūryaś ca pavanaḥ śukram eva ca | eka eva smṛto rāśis tato bhūtāni jajñire ||
Food (anna) is presented as the fundamental basis of life and cosmic processes: it sustains vital forces (wind/breath), supports generative power (śukra), and is linked to the functioning of the world (sun). From this unified source, beings arise—highlighting the ethical importance of nourishment, sustenance, and responsible living.
Nārada is explaining a doctrinal point about origins: he connects bodily and cosmic principles to a single underlying support—anna—asserting that from this aggregate source the birth of beings proceeds.
