Aṣṭāvakra–Strī-saṃvāda: Dhṛti, hospitality, and a dispute on autonomy

प्रज्ञाता या प्रशान्ता या शेषा गच्छन्तु च्छन्दत: । अष्टावक्रने कहा--'सारी स्त्रियाँ अपने-अपने घरको चली जायाँ। केवल एक ही मेरे पास रह जाय। जो ज्ञानवती तथा मन और इन्द्रियोंको शान्त रखनेवाली हो, उसीको यहाँ रहना चाहिये। शेष स्त्रियाँ अपनी इच्छाके अनुसार जा सकती हैं”

prajñātā yā praśāntā yā śeṣā gacchantu chandasataḥ | aṣṭāvakra uvāca—sarvāḥ striyaḥ sva-sva-gṛhaṃ gacchantu; kevalam ekā mama pārśve tiṣṭhatu; yā jñānavatī mana-indriya-saṃyamavatī ca sātra tiṣṭhet; śeṣāḥ sva-icchayā gacchantu |

قال أَشْطافَكْرَةُ: «لتَعُدْ جميعُ النساء إلى بيوتهنّ. ولْتَبْقَ معي واحدةٌ فقط—هي التي تَحْسُنُ بصيرتُها وتَسْكُنُ سريرتُها، وتملك زمامَ عقلها وحواسّها. وأمّا الباقيات فليَنْصَرِفْنَ كما شِئْنَ.» إنّ هذا القول يجعل الاستحقاق لا بالمنزلة ولا بالمظهر، بل بضبط النفس والحكمة، ويجعل الكفَّ والصفاء مؤهِّلين أخلاقيين للقرب من المعلّم.
