Discerning Dharma in Accord with Time
yaḥ vakṣin-nirayāt tasmāt samuttarati karhicit | mānuṣyaṁ labhate cāpi hīnāyus tatra jāyate ||

Even when one eventually escapes a hellish consequence, karmic effects do not vanish instantly; they can persist as limitations in the next life—here, a shortened human lifespan—highlighting moral accountability across births.
Maheśvara describes the post-mortem trajectory of a wrongdoer: after suffering in a particular hell (niraya), if release occurs, the being returns to human birth, but with the lingering consequence of reduced longevity.
