Fruits of Disparaging vs. Observing Dharma; Marks of Good Conduct
etaiḥ karmaphalaiḥ devi nyūna-jāti-kulodbhavaḥ | śūdro 'py āgama-sampanno dvijo bhavati saṃskṛtaḥ ||
The verse teaches that the fruits of one’s actions (karmaphala) can transform future birth and status: even someone born in a socially ‘low’ condition can, through accumulated merit, be reborn with scriptural learning and the refinements of saṃskāra, attaining dvija-status. Ethical conduct and spiritual discipline are presented as decisive, not mere birth.
Śrī Mahēśvara addresses Devī while explaining the power of karma and its results. He illustrates how karmic outcomes can elevate a person across births—from a Śūdra of humble origin to a learned, ritually refined dvija—within a broader instruction on dharma and moral causality.
