Ādi-parva Adhyāya 3 — Janamejaya’s Rite, Dhaumya’s Parīkṣā, and Uttanka’s Kuṇḍala Quest

sa evam ukto bāḍham ity uktvā tadā tad vṛṣabhasya mūtra-purīṣaṃ ca bhakṣayitvottakaḥ sambhramād utthita evāpa upaspṛśya pratasthē |

Educational Q&A

The passage highlights steadfastness in dharma: a seeker may be required to endure socially repugnant or personally difficult acts when they are commanded within a legitimate vow-bound context. It also points to the distinction between external impurity and the inner intention of obedience and discipline.

Uttanka agrees to what he has been told, consumes the bull’s urine and dung, quickly performs ācamana while still standing due to urgency, and then departs to continue his mission.
