Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 115 — Mādri’s request; invocation of the Aśvins; birth and naming of the Pāṇḍavas
tāṃ sa māṃsamayīṃ peśīṃ dadarśa japatāṃ varaḥ | tato 'bravīt saubaleyīṃ kim idaṃ te cikīrṣitam ||
The verse highlights moral scrutiny of intention (cikīrṣā): even amid extraordinary events, actions are evaluated by purpose, and a sage’s discernment intervenes to guide outcomes toward dharma rather than impulsive or harmful choices.
Vyāsa sees the unusual result of Gāndhārī’s pregnancy—a lump of flesh—and immediately questions her intention regarding it, setting up his guidance that will shape the subsequent birth of the Kauravas.
