Lord Vishnu (narrating to Garuda/Vinata-putra)

Afterlife Stage: Naraka

Concept: Karma conditions perception: the same phenomenon (radiance) is apprehended as terror by the papa-bound mind.

Vedantic Theme: Citta-vṛtti and saṃskāra shape experience; avidyā-driven mind projects fear and suffering onto phenomena; bondage is experiential as well as situational.

Application: Purify perception through sattvic living, mantra, and self-inquiry; reduce guilt and harmful habits that make the mind fear its own reflections.

Primary Rasa: bhayanaka

Secondary Rasa: raudra

Type: infernal blazing region

Related Themes: Garuda Purana Pretakalpa: sensory torments (darśana, sparśa, etc.) in naraka; perception as punishment

FAQs

This verse shows that post-death experience is shaped by karma: the same blazing radiance is perceived as terrifying by sinners, emphasizing moral causality rather than random punishment.

It implies that the departing being undergoes intense, perception-based experiences; for those burdened by sin, even what is radiant and powerful is encountered as dreadful, indicating a karmically conditioned after-death journey.

Cultivate ethical conduct and restraint (avoid pāpa), because the Purana links inner moral state with the quality of one’s experiences—here and after death.
