Lord Vishnu (in dialogue instruction to Garuda/Vinatā-putra)
Afterlife Stage: Pretayoni
Beneficiary: Pitr
Concept: Ritual performed with wrong discernment (pārthakya/bheda-buddhi) becomes moha; offerings miss the intended spiritual efficacy when not aligned with truth and proper śrāddha intent.
Vedantic Theme: Avidyā (misapprehension) veils right knowledge; external karma without right jñāna/bhakti orientation fails to reach the intended end.
Application: Perform ancestral rites and worship with correct understanding of recipient, procedure, and purpose; prioritize Viṣṇu-centered śraddhā and scriptural guidance over sectarian or idiosyncratic substitutes.
Primary Rasa: karuna
Secondary Rasa: bibhatsa
Type: household
Related Themes: Garuda Purana Pretakalpa: emphasis on correct śrāddha and Viṣṇu-smaraṇa for preta’s welfare (general thematic parallel within Pretakalpa); Garuda Purana: critiques of misguided ritualism and wrong devatā-prāpti in afterlife contexts (thematic)
This verse shows pañcāmṛta is meaningful only when directed with correct understanding and recipient; mere formal worship of an unrelated icon is criticized as delusion.
It implies the departed remains helpless in its own condition while the living perform misdirected offerings, so the intended benefit does not reach the preta.
Perform śrāddha and related offerings with correct intention, proper recipient-focus, and guidance from tradition—avoid substituting the rite with unrelated symbolic acts.
