Sense-Discipline and Exclusive Refuge in Viṣṇu
sadā mūḍhaṃ khaḍgadevaṃ ca bhaktyā taṃ bhaktavatpūjayitvā ca samyak / taiḥ sārdhaṃ tvaṃ śvānavadgarjayitvā saṃtiṣṭhamāne svagṛhe caiva nityam
Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Bhakti misapplied to non-divine objects becomes delusion; true worship requires right object and right understanding.
Vedantic Theme: Avidyā distorts devotion; īśvara-bhakti vs. fetishization; tamasic tendencies degrade human dignity.
Application: Examine objects of reverence; redirect devotion toward Viṣṇu/Īśvara and toward virtues; avoid cultic violence and intoxicated group behavior.
Primary Rasa: bibhatsa
Secondary Rasa: hasya
Type: domestic interior/courtyard
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: emphasis on Viṣṇu-bhakti as salvific; critique of wrong worship and tamasic conduct
This verse links delusion (mūḍhatva) and misdirected devotion—treating an improper object like a true deity—with degrading karmic outcomes, including animal-like conduct and a lowered state of living.
By portraying the person as ‘always deluded’ and behaving ‘like a dog’ with similar-minded company, it indicates that wrong inner orientation (bhakti toward an improper object) shapes tendencies and can lead to degraded conditions after death and in subsequent existence.
Keep devotion aligned with dharma—avoid superstition and harmful cults of violence; cultivate sattvic worship, ethical conduct, and right discernment so that habits and associations elevate rather than degrade character.
