Guṇa-vibhāga: The Three Modes and the Path Beyond Them
sāttviky ādhyātmikī śraddhā karma-śraddhā tu rājasī tāmasy adharme yā śraddhā mat-sevāyāṁ tu nirguṇā
This verse explains that faith aimed at spiritual realization is sāttvika, faith in fruitive work is rājasika, and faith in irreligion is tāmasika—while faith in service to Kṛṣṇa is nirguṇa, beyond the modes.
Kṛṣṇa was teaching Uddhava how to discern the influence of the guṇas in one’s inner life and how devotion to Him (mat-sevā) transcends material conditioning.
Shift motivation from results or identity to sincere service—regular hearing and chanting of Kṛṣṇa’s names, offering daily actions to Him, and choosing habits that support devotion rather than mere pleasure or prestige.
