The Awakening of Kumbhakarna
ततश्चक्रुर्महात्मानंकुम्भकर्णाग्रतस्तदाचाग्रतः ।।।।मांसानांमेरुसङ्काशंराशिंपरमतर्पणम् ।
tataś cakrur mahātmānaṁ kumbhakarṇāgratas tadā cāgrataḥ |
māṁsānāṁ meru-saṅkāśaṁ rāśiṁ parama-tarpaṇam ||6.60.30||
Then, before Kumbhakarṇa, they set a mountain-like heap of meat—vast as Meru—meant to rouse and satisfy him to the fullest.
Thereafter the Rakshasas placed a heap of me at the size of Meru Mountain to please him immensely.
The scene illustrates how adharma sustains itself through indulgence and appetite rather than restraint. Dharma emphasizes moderation and right means; here, excess is used to mobilize violence.
The Rākṣasas prepare enormous provisions to awaken and energize Kumbhakarṇa for the coming battle.
By contrast, the virtue implied is self-restraint (dama) and temperance—qualities absent from this indulgent preparation.
