Jaṭilāvatāra-Parīkṣā: Pārvatyāḥ Tapasāṃ Parīkṣaṇam
The Jaṭilā Episode and the Testing of Pārvatī’s Austerity
शिव उवाच । कुत्र त्वं यासि मां हित्वा न त्वन्त्याज्या मया शिवे । मया परीक्षितासि त्वं दृढभक्तासि मेऽनघे
śiva uvāca | kutra tvaṃ yāsi māṃ hitvā na tvantyājyā mayā śive | mayā parīkṣitāsi tvaṃ dṛḍhabhaktāsi me'naghe
湿婆说道:“吉祥的湿婆妃啊,你要往何处去,竟将我留下?我绝不会舍弃你。无垢者,我已试验过你;你对我之奉爱坚固不移。”
Lord Shiva
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Umāpati
Type: stotra
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: liberating
It highlights that the Lord may test a devotee’s resolve, and when devotion is proven firm (dṛḍha-bhakti), Shiva responds with assurance and protective grace—an expression of Pati’s compassion toward the pashu who turns to Him.
The verse reflects Saguna Shiva’s personal relationship with the devotee: Shiva speaks directly, consoles, and accepts devotion after testing—mirroring how Linga-worship is not merely symbolic but a living bond with the Lord who bestows anugraha (grace).
The practical takeaway is steadiness in bhakti—daily japa of the Panchakshara (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with consistent Linga-pūjā; the verse emphasizes perseverance through inner tests rather than changing one’s vow or practice.
