Puruṣa–Prakṛti Analysis in Advaita Śaiva Doctrine
वामदेव उवाच । नियत्यधस्तात्प्रकृतेरुपरिस्थः पुमानिति । पूर्वत्र भवता प्रोक्तमिदानीं कथमन्यथा
vāmadeva uvāca | niyatyadhastātprakṛteruparisthaḥ pumāniti | pūrvatra bhavatā proktamidānīṃ kathamanyathā
瓦摩提婆说道:“先前你曾说,普鲁沙(有觉知的真我)位于尼耶提之下、而在普拉克里蒂之上。为何如今你却又另作他言?”
Vamadeva
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Role: teaching
The verse highlights careful discernment (viveka) in Shaiva philosophy: liberation depends on correctly understanding the hierarchy of principles (tattvas) that bind the soul, and how consciousness (Puruṣa) relates to limiting powers like Niyati and material nature (Prakṛti).
By questioning apparent contradictions in metaphysical teaching, the verse supports the Shaiva Siddhanta approach where Saguna Shiva (worshipped as the Liṅga) is the supreme Pati who transcends Prakṛti and all limiting categories; right doctrine strengthens right worship.
The practical takeaway is scriptural inquiry and contemplation alongside Shiva-upāsanā—reciting the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and meditating on Shiva as the transcendent Lord beyond Prakṛti and Niyati, while maintaining purity practices such as bhasma and rudrākṣa where prescribed.
