Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Significance: Highlights guru-sannidhi as the channel of Śiva’s anugraha: the vow becomes efficacious when sealed before the guru, stabilizing the disciple’s practice.
Mantra: varaṃ prāṇaparityāgaśchedanaṃ śiraso'pi me | na tvanabhyarcya bhuñjīyāṃ bhagavantaṃ trilocanam
Role: teaching
It emphasizes that Śiva-bhakti must be anchored in guru-guided discipline: a vow is not merely spoken, but sealed through repetition, presence of the Guru, and unwavering resolve—preparing the disciple to receive Śiva’s grace (anugraha).
By insisting on a firm vow taken before the Guru, the verse frames Saguna worship (such as Liṅga-pūjā) as a committed sādhana: devotion becomes stable through rule-bound practice and reverence, rather than remaining a passing emotion.
A formal sankalpa (vow) made before one’s Guru and repeated three times—often paired in Shaiva practice with daily japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and disciplined observances, done with steady mind and devotion.
