Prakarana 8

They bowed their heads to the Lord’s lotus-feet; seeing those champions, Raghupati’s heart was pleased. Rama, casting a gracious glance upon the pair, made their weariness vanish, and they became supremely glad. Knowing Angada and Hanuman had gone, the many bear and monkey warriors turned back. At dusk the demons, gaining strength, rushed forth, raising the rallying cry of the ten-headed king. Seeing the demon host, the monkeys wheeled about; everywhere warriors met with snarling clamor. The two mighty armies challenged and counter-challenged; the champions fought, refusing to accept defeat. The great demon heroes were all dark-hued; the monkey-faces were burdened with many colors. Both sides—equally strong—fought in wrath, yet as if in sport. Dense autumn clouds seemed to gather; they fought as though driven by the wind. Indrajit, Akampana, and Atikaya, seeing the army shaken, worked their sorcery: in an instant a great darkness fell, and there rained a shower of blood-hail and dust.

Verse 135 (दोहा/सोरठा)

Raghunatha understood the whole import. He called Angada and Hanuman and took them with him. They related every report and explained it; hearing it, the mighty monkey-chiefs rushed forth in wrath. Then the Compassionate Lord smiled, strung His bow, and instantly discharged a fire-like arrow. Light spread everywhere; nowhere remained darkness—just as when knowledge dawns and doubts depart. The bears and the strong vanaras, finding that radiance, ran forward in joy, their fatigue and fear dispelled. Hanuman and Angada roared in battle; hearing their shouts, the rakshasas fled. As they fled, they were beaten and flung upon the ground; bears and monkeys performed wondrous feats. Seizing them by the feet they hurled them into the sea, where crocodiles, serpents, and fishes caught and devoured them.

Verse 137 (दोहा/सोरठा)

Knowing it to be night, the four monkey divisions came to where the Lord of Kosala stood. Rama, in compassion, cast His glance on them all; at once the vanaras’ fatigue was gone. There Ravana summoned his ministers and told them of the warriors who had been slain. ‘Half our host the monkeys have destroyed—say quickly, what counsel shall we take?’ Malyavan, a very aged rakshasa, a foremost minister—Ravana’s maternal grandsire—spoke words of pure policy: ‘Listen, my son; accept a little instruction from me. Since the day you brought Sita by stealing her, ill-omens have arisen beyond telling. He whose glory Vedas and Puranas sing—none who turns away from Rama ever finds happiness.’

‘Abandon enmity; return Vaidehi, and worship the treasure of compassion, the supremely loving Lord.’ Those words struck like arrows; with face darkened in disgrace, the wretch departed. ‘Had you not grown old, I would have killed you; now do not show me your face again!’ In his own mind he inferred: “This ocean of compassion desires my death.” Rising, he went off speaking insolently; then thunder-voiced Ravana spoke in anger: ‘See my sport at dawn; I shall do much—why say little?’ Hearing his son’s words, his confidence returned; with affection he seated him on his lap. While they were still deliberating, dawn arrived; and the monkeys again took position at the four gates. Enraged, the monkeys surrounded the impregnable fort; a great uproar rose in the city. The rakshasas rushed forth with varied weapons, and from the fort they toppled mountain-peaks (as missiles).

They brought down mountain-peaks by the million and sent boulders flying in every manner. The crash roared like thunderbolts, as though the clouds of dissolution were bursting. The fierce monkey-warriors closed, were cut and torn, yet did not waver though their bodies grew mangled. Grasping crags, they hurled them upon the fort, and the demons were struck down everywhere.

“Where are the two brothers, the Lord of Kosala—those famed archers? Where are Nala and Nila, Dwivida and Sugriva—Angada and Hanuman, the very limit of strength? And where is Vibhishana, that brother-betrayer? Today I will, by sheer resolve, slay them all!” So saying, he set hard arrows to the bow and drew with fury up to his ears. Then he began to loose volleys of shafts—like many winged serpents rushing forth. Everywhere monkeys were seen falling; in that moment none could stand before him. The apes and bears fled in all directions, and the desire for battle left them all. No monkey or bear was to be seen on the field whom he had not struck so that no breath remained.

Seeing the Wind’s son and the host in distress, Hanuman rushed like Death in wrath. He instantly uprooted a great mountain and, in fierce anger, hurled it at Meghanada. Seeing it coming, he fled into the sky, losing chariot, charioteer, and horses. Again and again Hanuman challenged him, but he would not come near—having understood the secret. Thunder-voiced Meghanada went up close to Raghupati and hurled insults in many ways. He cast weapons and missiles of every kind; the Lord, as though in sport, cut them down and turned them aside. Seeing that majesty, the fool grew frantic and began many devices of māyā. It was like someone trying to play with Garuda—snatching a tiny snake only to frighten him.

Mounting the sky, a heavy rain of embers poured down; from the very earth, torrents of water sprang forth. In many forms, ghouls and ghoul-women danced, crying the clangor of ‘Strike! Cut!’ Filth, pus, blood, hair, and bones rained; at times great hailstones were hurled as well. Dust fell and made a darkness so thick that one could not see even the spread of one’s own hand. The monkeys, seeing this illusion, grew distraught, as though death had been written for them all. Rama, beholding the spectacle, only smiled—yet all the monkeys took fright. With a single arrow He severed the whole illusion, as the sun drives away amassed darkness. And when He cast His gracious glance upon the monkeys and bears, they grew mighty and could not be held back from battle.

Verse 148 (दोहा/सोरठा)

With copper-red eyes, a broad chest and massive arms—his body like the Himalaya, with a strange flush upon it—here Rāvaṇa dispatched his champions, who rushed forward grasping diverse missiles and weapons. The monkeys too charged, wielding mountains, claws, and trees for arms, crying ‘Victory to Rama!’ All collided, pairing strength with strength; on every side the desire to win was fierce. With fists and kicks and even with teeth they tore; those victory-hardened monkeys struck and then shouted defiance again. ‘Strike! Strike! Seize him! Seize him—kill!’—such cries rose, as heads were smashed and arms wrenched up. The roar filled the nine regions; everywhere headless trunks ran in terrible fury. From the sky the hosts of gods watched the spectacle—now astonished, now delighted.

How splendid the wounded heroes looked—like palāśa trees in full crimson bloom. Lakshman and Meghnad, the two champions, clashed with each other in fierce wrath. Neither could overcome the other; the demon resorted to deceitful strength and unrighteous tactics. Then, in boundless rage, he shattered Lakshman’s chariot and the charioteer at once. After many kinds of blows, the rākṣasa was left with life scarcely remaining. Ravana’s son reasoned within himself: “A crisis has come—he will take my life!” He hurled the hero-slaying spear; a blazing mass struck Lakshman in the chest. When the Śakti-weapon struck, Lakshman swooned; yet the foe advanced, casting off fear.

meghnāda sama koṭi sata jodhā rahe uṭhāi | jagadādhāra seṣa kimi uṭhai cale khisiāi ||54||

“Listen, O Girijā: the fire of whose wrath can burn the fourteen worlds in an instant— he could win the battle; gods, men, even the Fire-god and all the world would serve him. Only one upon whom Rama’s grace rests can understand this wonder. Evening fell; then both armies set about restoring their respective ranks. The all-pervading Brahman, unconquered Lord of the worlds—how could the Compassionate One ask, ‘Where is Lakshman?’ Meanwhile Hanuman returned; seeing his younger brother, the Lord was sorely grieved. Jambavan said, ‘In Lanka there is a physician, Sushena—send for him.’ Hanuman assumed a tiny form, went, and at once brought him, house and all.”
