Svayambhuva Manu and Shatarupa—of them was born the peerless lineage of mankind. That noble pair practised righteousness so well that even now the Vedas sing the path they traced. Uttanapada was their royal son, whose son was Dhruva, the devotee of Hari. The younger son was named Priyavrata, whom the Vedas and Puranas celebrate. Devahuti too was his daughter, dear wife of the sage Kardama. In her womb the primal Lord, compassionate to the lowly, took birth as the gracious Kapila. He clearly set forth the Sankhya-shastra, and as Bhagavan was supremely skilled in discerning the true principles. Thus Manu ruled for a long time, upholding in every way the Lord’s command.

By sheer constraint the prince was then sent away; with his wife he took his departure to the forest. There lay the renowned holy ford of Naimish—most sanctifying, a giver of attainment to the earnest seeker. There dwelt a fellowship of sages and perfected ones; and thither, with gladness in his heart, King Manu set forth. Along the road the steadfast-minded shone, as though Knowledge and Devotion had taken bodies and walked. Reaching the bank of the Dhenumati, they joyfully bathed in the stainless waters. Siddhas, sages, and men of wisdom came to meet him, knowing him for a king-sage, foremost in the burden of dharma. Wherever fair pilgrim-spots appeared, the sages had them all reverently visited and observed. Lean of frame, clad in ascetics’ cloth, they ever kept the company of the true and daily heard the Purāṇas.

They lived on greens, fruits, and roots, and kept Brahman—Being, Consciousness, Bliss—ever in remembrance. Then, for the Lord’s sake, they undertook austerity, living on water alone and renouncing even roots and fruits. In their hearts there was one unbroken longing: to behold with their eyes that Supreme Lord Himself. That attributeless, undivided, infinite, beginningless One—whom the seekers of the highest truth contemplate; whom the Vedas, by the method of “not this, not this,” attempt to indicate—self-blissful, unconditioned, incomparable; from whose partial manifestations arise in manifold ways Śiva, Brahmā, and Viṣṇu— even He is mastered by His servants, and for the devotee’s sake takes up a body of divine play. If this saying of the revealed word be true, then our desire to worship Him shall surely be fulfilled.

For ten thousand years he renounced all indulgence, standing unmoved—one foot raised, the other planted. Seeing his boundless austerity, Brahma and Vishnu drew near again and again. They urged him in many ways, “Ask a boon!” yet the supremely steadfast would not be swayed by any prompting. His body was reduced to little more than bone; even then no trace of anguish touched his mind. The all-knowing Lord, recognizing him as His own servant, understood the single-minded end of that ascetic. Then a voice rang out from the sky: “Ask, ask a boon!”—deep and solemn, steeped in nectar-like compassion. That life-restoring utterance, as it entered his heart through the channels of hearing, was most auspicious. At once his body became fresh and strong, as though he had just come from his home.

“Hear, O servant—O wish-fulfilling tree, O celestial cow—dust of the feet adored by Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva! Easy to serve, bestower of every joy, guardian of the surrendered, Lord of all that moves and all that is still: If indeed Thou hast loving regard for the good of the helpless, then be gracious and grant this boon— That very Form which abides in Shiva’s heart, for whose sake sages strive with discipline; That Form which Bhushundi’s mind, the swan upon the lake of Manas, delights in, and which the Vedas praise as both with attributes and beyond attributes— May we behold that same Form, filling our eyes. Show mercy, O Deliverer from the anguish of those who bow. The couple’s words were most dear; gentle and humble, they were drenched in the savor of love. The Lord, lover of His devotees, ocean of compassion—the Bhagavan, Sovereign of the universe—stood revealed.”

His face outshone the autumn moon; lovely were His cheeks, His chin, and His slender neck. His lips were crimson, His teeth fair, His nose well-shaped; His smile surpassed a cluster of moonbeams. Fresh as newly-blown lotuses were His beautiful eyes; His charming glance stole away the heart. His eyebrows defeated the grace of Love’s bow; the tilak upon His broad forehead shone with splendor. Makara-shaped earrings and a crown glittered on His head; His curling locks were as though a swarm of bees. On His chest gleamed the auspicious Srivatsa and a fair forest-garland; pearl necklaces and gem-studded ornaments adorned Him. Lion-like were His shoulders; upon Him lay the sacred thread; beautiful too were the ornaments on His arms. His comely arms were like elephant trunks; at His waist were the quiver, the arrows, and the mighty bow.

The lotus-feet—no words can fully describe them—within which the bee-like minds of sages make their dwelling. On His left side, in perfect harmony, shines Sita: the primal Power, the world’s root, a treasury of beauty. From but a portion of Her arise the mines of virtue—countless Lakshmis, Umas, and Brahmanis. By the mere play of Her brows the universe comes to be; that very Sita sits on Rama’s left. Beholding the ocean of beauty that is Hari’s form, they stood with eyes fixed, as though their eyelids were held back. With reverence they gazed upon that matchless form; the mind, taking a hundred shapes, would not accept satiety. Overcome by joy, forgetting the body’s condition, they fell like rigid staffs, clasping His feet in their hands. The Lord touched their heads with His own lotus-hand, and at once the treasury of compassion raised them up.
Verse 312 (दोहा/सोरठा)

慈悲之宝又复开言;洞见我心,欢喜无量。那至极慷慨的主早已明了我意,便说:“求吧——随你心中所愿,赐你恩愿。”

Hearing the Lord’s words, she folded both hands; gathering patience, she spoke in gentle accents: “O Master, beholding Thy lotus-feet, all my works are now fulfilled. Yet one great longing abides within my heart—such as cannot be called either easy or hard to utter. To Thee, O Lord, it is most easy to bestow; but to me, through my own unworthiness, it seems unattainable. As when a poor man finds the celestial wish-fulfilling tree, he hesitates to ask for much, not knowing its true power— so too a doubt arises in my heart. Thou art the Knower of all within; fulfil, O Sovereign, my heart’s desire. Cast away my bashfulness and bid me ask, O King: for to me there is nothing that cannot be given to thee.”
Verse 314 (दोहा/सोरठा)

Seeing their love and hearing those priceless words, the Treasure of compassion replied, “So be it.” “Where should I go to seek one equal to Myself? O king, I have come to become your son.” Then, looking upon Satarupa with joined palms, He said, “O queen, ask the boon that pleases you.” “The boon, O Lord, which that wise king has asked—O Merciful One—that alone is exceedingly dear to me. “Yet, Lord, it seems sheer presumption—though for a devotee’s good it becomes You. “You are the Father of Brahma and the rest, the Master of the world; You are Brahman, the Inner-knower of every heart. “Understanding thus, doubt arises in my mind: will that which the Lord has accepted truly come to pass? “For those who are Your own devotees, O Master—what joy they attain, what final state they obtain!”

“Hear this gentle, profound, and pleasing noble utterance”: thus spoke the Ocean of Mercy in tender words. “Whatever desire has arisen in thy heart, that have I granted—let there be no doubt at all. Mother, thy discernment is wondrous beyond the common; never shall My grace be withdrawn.” Bowing at His feet, the mind spoke again: “One more petition, O Lord, is mine. Let me have, as a child before Thee, loving devotion to Thy feet; let none call me greatly foolish for it. As a serpent without its jewel, as a fish without water—so is my life dependent on Thee. Asking such a boon, I clung to His feet; the Treasure of Compassion said, ‘So be it.’ “Now, obey My command and go dwell in the city of the Lord of the gods.”
