Tārā’s Lament over Vāli
sugrīvasya vaśaṃ prāpto vidhir eṣa bhavaty aho | sugrīva eva vikrānto vīra sāhasika-priya ||
'O lover of brave deeds, fate has brought you under the sway of Sugriva, although he had lost to you.
The verse highlights how worldly power and victory can reverse by fate; it cautions against pride in strength and invites humility before dharma and the larger moral order.
Tārā laments to the wounded Vāli after his duel, expressing shock that he now lies subdued while Sugrīva appears triumphant.
Vāli’s recognized valor (vikrānti) is underscored, even as Tārā mourns the tragic reversal of fortune.
