The Slaying of Vali
निवर्तस्व सह स्त्रीभिः कथं भूयोऽनुगच्छसि।सौहृदं दर्शितं तारे मयि भक्ति: कृता त्वया4.16.6।।
nivartasva saha strībhiḥ kathaṃ bhūyo ’nugacchasi |
sauhṛdaṃ darśitaṃ tāre mayi bhaktiḥ kṛtā tvayā ||4.16.6||
你且与众女眷一同回去吧;为何又要再跟随我?噢,塔罗,你的善意已然显明,你对我的虔敬也已坚定无疑。
'Go back with all the women of the harem. Why do you follow me again? Your devotion towards me is evident from the sincere concern expressed by you.
The verse highlights the dharma of measured action: once counsel and loyalty are acknowledged, one should avoid unnecessary persistence that could increase risk—especially when danger is imminent.
Tārā is trying to restrain Vālī from rushing into renewed conflict; Vālī dismisses further following and acknowledges her concern and devotion.
Tārā’s steadfast loyalty and goodwill (sauhṛda, bhakti) are explicitly affirmed, even as Vālī chooses a confrontational course.
