Parashurama Confronts Rama with the Vaishnava Bow
sa tvaṃ dharmaparo bhūtvā kāśyapāya vasundharām | dattvā vanam upāgamya mahendrakṛtaketanaḥ ||
By adhering to righteousness in life and having conferred the earth upon Kasyapa, you retired to the forest and made your residence on the Mahendra mountain.
Dharma includes dāna (rightful giving) and nivṛtti (withdrawal): relinquishing power and choosing restraint can be higher righteousness than domination.
Daśaratha recounts Paraśurāma’s earlier dharmic acts—donating the earth to Kāśyapa and retiring to Mahendra—implying he should remain peaceful now.
Renunciant discipline: the capacity to step back from violence and possession.
