Entry toward Viśālā and the Indra–Kṣīrodamathana Legend
ity uktvā ca suraśreṣṭhas tatraivāntaradhīyata | devatānāṃ bhayaṃ dṛṣṭvā śrutvā vākyaṃ tu śārṅgiṇaḥ | hālāhalaviṣaṃ ghoraṃ sa jagrāhāmṛtopamam ||
Hari, smiling said to the tridentbearing Rudra "O Chief of celestial beings you were born the earliest among the devatas. Therefore, while churning the ocean whichever is produced first shall be offered to you. Considering it the first offering, O Lord accept this venom."
The highest dharma is loka-saṃgraha (holding the world together): a great being accepts personal suffering to remove collective danger.
After Viṣṇu’s request, Śiva accepts the poison to save the terrified gods and prevent universal ruin.
Tyāga (self-sacrifice) and karuṇā (compassion): Śiva bears the dreadful poison as if it were nectar.
