The verse highlights the ethical weight of acceptance and rejection in relationships: harsh repudiation can have grave consequences, and speech can become a form of coercion when it threatens self-harm. It invites reflection on responsibility, compassion, and the dangers of manipulating another through extreme vows.
A speaker (reported by Bṛhadaśva) voices intense devotion and warns that if they are rejected, they will end their life using poison, fire, drowning, or hanging—framing the threatened act as caused by the other person’s refusal.
