Defects of Anger and the Praise of Forbearance
tavemām āpadaṁ dṛṣṭvā samṛddhiṁ ca suyodhane | dhātāraṁ garhaye pārtha viṣamaṁ yo 'nupaśyati, kuntīnandana ||
The verse voices a moral protest against apparent cosmic injustice: when the virtuous suffer and the wicked prosper, one is tempted to condemn Fate. It highlights the tension between lived experience and the ideal of a just moral order (dharma), a recurring Mahābhārata concern.
Yudhiṣṭhira addresses Arjuna, lamenting the Pandavas’ misfortune in contrast to Duryodhana’s prosperity. In grief and indignation, he censures the cosmic Disposer as if it were acting with partiality.
