Defects of Anger and the Praise of Forbearance
atīva moham āyāti manaś ca na paribhūyate | niśāmya te duḥkham idam imāṃ cāpadaṃ īdṛśīm ||
The verse highlights a dharmic sensitivity: witnessing another’s suffering can shake the mind into moha (bewilderment). It implicitly points to the need for steadiness and discernment in crisis—compassion must be guided by clear judgment rather than being overwhelmed by grief.
Yudhiṣṭhira addresses someone who is undergoing severe distress. On observing that person’s sorrow and the frightening calamity, he confesses that his own mind is becoming overwhelmed, indicating the gravity of the situation and his empathetic response.
