Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds the dharmic complexity of loyalty: protecting one’s comrade (Karna) is treated as a duty, yet the chosen means—swift, forceful counterattack—also shows how allegiance can intensify violence. It invites reflection on when protection becomes escalation and how kṣatriya duty balances defense with restraint.

The Kaurava side, intent on safeguarding Karna (Vaikartana), advances again against the Gandharvas. With a large chariot contingent moving in varied maneuvers, they form a protective screen around Karna while simultaneously showering the Gandharvas with arrows.
