Dharma-vyādha’s Instruction on Śiṣṭācāra and Dharma
svādhyāyena karśitaṁ brahmacāriṇaṁ māṁ viddhi | tapasā damena yuktaṁ ācāryasyāpratikūlabhāṣiṇam | evaṁ yuktam apāpaṁ māṁ viddhi |
Ethical authority is grounded in disciplined practice: sustained Vedic study (svādhyāya), austerity (tapas), self-restraint (dama), and respectful, non-oppositional speech toward one’s teacher. These together are presented as marks of purity and yogic steadiness.
Mārkaṇḍeya identifies and legitimizes himself by describing his ascetic student-life and conduct—emphasizing celibacy, rigorous study, controlled senses, and deference to his preceptor—so that the listener accepts him as a trustworthy, sinless speaker.
